“What Happened, Miss Simone?” is an American biographical documentary film about Nina Simone directed by Liz Garbus.

Classically trained pianist, dive-bar singer, black power icon and legendary artist Nina Simone became a civil rights activist and moved to Liberia following the 1960s. The documentary uses never-before-heard recordings, rare archival footage and her best-known songs to tell her story. Nina’s daughter Lisa Simone Kelly served as the film’s executive producer.

The film was nominated for six Primetime Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Documentary or Nonfiction Special and Outstanding Directing for a Nonfiction Program, winning the former.
